Massage Therapy Diploma Program

The Massage Therapy diploma program provides both technical and practical training which will enable the graduate, upon licensure and/or certification, to function as a competent entry-level massage therapist. The program provides the student with the basic knowledge of the practice in introduction to massage therapy, massage fundamentals, massage and bodyworks, anatomy and physiology, business and success skills, and health and wellness. Also covered in this program are psychological concepts, kinesiology and muscle movement, professional health, hygiene, and boundaries. The program emphasizes theory, as well as hands-on practice. Upon completion of this program, the graduate will be fully prepared to take the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx), offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards.

Hours

The Massage Therapy Program is offered both day and evening. Day classes are held Monday through Thursday between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Evening classes are held Monday through Thursday between 5:30 pm until 10:30 pm. Classes missed due to holidays or other scheduled cancellations are made up on assigned Fridays or by extending regular class hours. Clinical assignments may not coincide with normal school hours or days. This in-depth training is a combination of classroom, interactive lab, and externship.

Nature of Work

A career in massage therapy allows the student to help people in a meaningful way with a high degree of personal contact. Massage therapy provides an opportunity to express values about caring and well-being in one’s work in a way both personally and professionally rewarding. Massage therapists must be knowledgeable on alternative treatments as they will work in association with other health professionals, such as doctors of traditional medicine and physical and occupational therapists, to reduce pain and promote healing in their patients.

As a professional massage therapist, the graduate of this program will be skilled in the art and science of Swedish/deep tissue massage. Also covered in this program are other techniques such as sports massage, deep tissue, Swedish, pre-natal massage, energetic modalities, hot stone, body treatments, chair massage, trigger points, reflexology, and aromatherapy. These various techniques help to restore circulation and proper physiological functioning of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. These methods also help a person to achieve positive emotional effects and can have a stress reducing influence on the client. In addition to the various forms and techniques of massage, students will also learn about small business principles and what is required to become successful as a business/practice owner. Massage Therapy students have options in  their career paths and will be guided in their direction of choice.

The distinguishing characteristics of a person entering this career include a deep commitment to the service of others, a willingness to provide quality health care as a part of a health care team, and an interest in the day-to-day operations of a modern health care facility. Above all, a massage therapist touches and sees a person as a whole and integrated human being having not just a body, but a mind and spirit within the body. Massage Therapists should have excellent communication skills and emotional resilience.

Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of massage therapists is expected to grow by 32% from 2020 to 2030. The versatility of this career will allow a graduate to develop a clientele, be involved in the operation and management of a modern business office and maintain a professional massage therapy practice. The broad range of specialties within the field will also allow the massage therapist to continue to expand his or her repertoire and grow within their respective field for the life of their career. There is an ever-increasing acceptance of massage as a holistic approach to health care and health maintenance. As a result, career opportunities for massage therapists are abundant. Opportunities exist in private practice, hospitals, chiropractic offices, rehab centers, fitness centers, and health spas.
